Michael B Jordan and Tessa Thompson will lead in Rocky spinoff “Creed”
After winning the Grand Jury Prize and US dramatic film at the Sundance Film Festival back in 2013 for his directorial debut with his first feature film Fruitvale Station, Ryan Coogler has since lined up Michael B Jordan (Fruitvale Station) for the second time along with Tessa Thompson (Dear White People) for lead roles in his next up and coming project, ‘Creed’.
‘Creed’ will apparently be a continuation of the infamous Rocky franchise. The film will follow the grandson of Apollo Creed (Michael B Jordan) showing determination of wanting to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps despite his family not wanting that for him.
Of course being apart of the Rocky franchise, Sylvester Stallone will indeed be returning to the big screens to resume his role as Rocky Balboa. However, this time around it is said that Balboa will return as a retired fighter turned trainer and no longer interested in the sport he has to be convinced by the younger Creed to mentor him and help prepare him for the ring.
The “Creed” movie is set to go into production in early 2015 so I’m guessing it won’t be released until 2016. Lets see if this will be another awards season contender like Cooler’s Fruitvale Station. Who knows Ryan Coogler could hopefully be inspiring up and coming Black British filmmakers out there to think outside of the box and create something as impactful like Fruitvale Station that the community can relate to.
Tessa recently celebrated her win for Breakthrough Actor at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, for her role in Dear White People. She will next be in Ava DuVernays “Selma”.
