Netflix adds new films to its’ library, like French Film “Girlhood”
Netflix are making their usual rounds of announcements regarding the films and television series titles that will be added or removed from its’ streaming library.
“All is By My Side” the Jimi Hendrix film, “Fruitvale Station” and “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas” are said to be some of the more recent Netflix additions.
Another film that will be joining the long list of titles in the streaming library is “Girlhood.” A French Drama originally called “Bande Des Filles” but marketed as Girlhood in English speaking countries, it was written and directed by Celine Sciamma. The film follows an all girl gang living in the more deprived areas of Paris, they help to bring a new girl out of her shell, which results in her making both brave and foolish decisions.
The film gained some positive feedback but also received it’s fair share of negative reviews from feminists who didn’t like some of the song suggestions used throughout the film as it displayed a misogynist manner. Others claimed the film was a horrible copy of “Boyhood.” However, I don’t understand what the two have in common apart from having the word “hood” in the name but I digress.
In all I think it’s a good watch. Like I’ve mentioned in a previous post it’s refreshing to watch stories about “ethnic minorities” and great to see different perspectives coming from parts of the world other than the US (which is usually the only perspective we get to see).
If you haven’t seen it yet, Girlhood will be available to watch on Netflix from 19th May.
